QUESTION 1:   (7Marks)

a.    Define business communication. (1Mark)

b.    Mention and briefly explain 4 objectives/functions of communication. (@1Mark)

c.    Mention 4 characteristics of Mass communication. (@0.5Mark)

  1. Define the term “channel” as related to communication. (1Mark)
  2. Define rumors. (1Mark)
  3. With just one key point, differentiate between formal and informal communication. (1Mark)
  4. Mention 4 types of grapevine chains as identified by Keith Days. (@1 Mark)

QUESTION 3: (7Marks)

a)    What do you understand by: Direction of communication?  (1Mark)                                                                  

b)    Classify each of the following communications as downward, horizontal, upward or diagonal. ( @1Mark)

                      i.        Director sends a letter to departmental managers

                     ii.        Sales manager sends an email to productions manager

                    iii.        Accounts officer in branch A communicates with branch manager of branch B.

                   iv.        Subordinate communicates with his/her superior. 

c)     Status and improper channel are some of the limitation of upward communication. Explain about each. (@1Mark)

  2. Oral communication has a delayed feedback as compared to written communication.
